Hey there!

I’m participating in a writing program led by a fantastic creativity coach. A couple of weeks back, she encouraged us to start paying attention to symbols popping up in our lives. She gave us the permission to view anything that “seemed” like a symbol, as a symbol.

She said something to the affect of: The only thing that makes something a symbol or not a symbol, is whether or not you choose to see it as a symbol.

A few years ago, my brothers-in-law came to visit. We were chatting on our back porch and one of them asked me a question. My response was, “Well, I used to be a lot more mystical back then.”

I had never said something like that before, nor thought of myself as “mystical” before saying that. I don’t know where that articulation came from. But as soon as I said it, it rang true in my body.

I realized that I really missed that part of myself.

The part of myself that felt guided through life, rather than trying to figure life out.

The part of myself that saw beauty and potential in everything my eyes took in.

Since that evening on the porch, I have been working to reconnect with that mystical part of myself. It’s not always smooth. I’m a real adult now, after all, with so many Responsibilities. But I’m trying to find ways to allow mysticism + strategy + responsibility to coexist.

So when my coach gave us the homework to pay attention to symbols and let them mean something to us, I was all in.

Psst: For any of you out there waiting on a sign to do something, consider this your sign.
